The last article was about the "approach lighting system", and let's continue to understand the lighting of landing.

三: Landing Lighting System

These lights are mainly concentrated on the runway.

Runway Threshold Lights

The light is installed at the longitudinal end of the runway or not more than 3 meters away from the end of the runway, and the color of the light is green.

The runway threshold lights are perpendicular to the runway centerline. Generally, there are no less than 6 runway threshold lights installed on the runway.

All kinds of precision approach runways are installed with a row of runway threshold lights, and the distance between the lights is 3 meters.

Runway Edge Lights

The runway edge lights are installed along the full length of the runway on a straight line on both sides of the runway that is equidistant and parallel to the runway centerline, or installed at no more than 3 meters beyond the runway edge.

The color of the light is variable white, and the distance between the head and tail of the yellow light is 600 meters or half of the runway, whichever is smaller.

These lights are used to indicate the boundaries on both sides of the runway.

Runway Centerline Lights

These lights are generally evenly spaced at longitudinal intervals of 5, 7, 15 or 30 meters, marking the runway centre line from the runway threshold to the end.

From the runway threshold to 900 meters from the end of the runway, it is a variable white fixed light;

From 900 meters from the end of the runway to 300 meters from the end of the runway, it is red and variable white;

From 300 meters from the end of the runway until the end of the runway is red.

In general, runway centerline lights must be installed on precision approach runways.

Runway Grounding Strip Light

This kind of light is not installed in all airports, only the touchdown zone of the precision approach runway will be set with the touchdown zone light.

The grounding zone light consists of several horizontally arranged light groups. The light is variable white in color and extends longitudinally forward from the runway threshold to 900 meters, only if the length of the runway is less than 1800 meters, this distance is shortened so that it does not exceed the midpoint of the runway.

The touchdown zone lights are arranged symmetrically on both sides of the runway centerline, and the lateral spacing between the innermost lights is not less than 18 meters and not more than 22.5 meters.

Each row of lights consists of at least 3 lamps with an interval of not more than 1.5 meters, and the longitudinal spacing between each row of lamps is 30 meters.

Runway End Lights

Runway end lights are set at the end of the runway with runway edge lights, and the number of lights is not less than 6.

A one-way constant light designed to emit red light in the direction of the runway to help pilots identify the end of the runway.

Fast Exit Taxiway Indicator Light

The light is a unidirectional yellow constant glow light. Set on the runway on the side of the runway centerline that joins the quick exit taxiway.

Provides the driver with information on the distance on the runway to the nearest express exit taxiway.

This allows it to better understand where the aircraft is in low visibility conditions, and to use the brakes more rationally for more efficient landing rolls and runway departure speeds.

Runway Turn Pad Lights

This is a one-way constant light that glows green and provides continuous guidance to the pilot in low visibility conditions to enable the aircraft to make 180-degree turns and align with the runway centerline.
